Short Pause is not a good horse
7 Nov 06 Tues. Today is the first time I ever celebrated Melbourne Cup Day in office. It always blew me away to know that the entire nation of Australia literally stopped for this day. Melbourne had this day a public holiday, but in Syndey, our office has organised a lunch for all or us 'working horses' to enjoy and see the match broadcast live in our office boardroom.
No pictures available, but according to our Australian colleagues, we had a typical Melbourne Cup Day lunch spread of bread rolls, roasted chicken and assorted salads. We also had alot of chips, candy snakes and jelly beans. Beverage of the day are assorted soft drinks and wine.
Nicola has organised a sweepstakes for the office and I chipped in $2 to bet on a horse which will be assigned to me 20 mins before the match starts by pulling a name out of the hat.
I got Short Pause. Marc told me with a burst of laughter that I need lotsa luck if my Short Pause wins. First prize is $300 and if your horse comes last, you get back your bet. Not bad for a small gamble!
At 3.30pm the pistol sounded and off all the horses go! Since everyone is crowded in the Boardroom, I waited at my desk for the results. Who won? Who lost? I was day dreaming with what I can do with my $300 prize money when Chun ran down the length of the office screaming, 'I won!'
I quickly ran to the Boardroom and asked,' Did my horse win? Did it come last?'
Drats. The results are out. Japanese horse Delta Blue came in first. Chun got that horse in the sweepstakes and he got the $300.
Short Pause did not even shamelessly come in last, so I lost my $2. Humph.
My betting ticket. My colleagues told me to identify my horse by the colour of the jersey its jocket wears. Cool.....
