3 Feb 2003 Chinese New Year Day 3
My dad is back! And he brought back lotsa stuff from Malaysia too. He also brought back our uncle’s car. He said that our uncle do not need the car for the New Year and had brought the car back for us to enjoy for a day or two. We decided to go to JB to have a nice dinner.
It was an automatic Honda. It is a very spacious car. I drove, yes I drove! to JB with my dad as my driving instructor. He was so gan jiong! He kept saying ‘Ooi!’ and was apprehensive about my driving skills all the way. I was fine at first and got so edgy as I drove along the expressway, as my dad was so excited and apprehensive all the way. It was such a funny scene. My dad even threatened to hang on to the handrail at the side of the car all the way and my mum told him to give me a break. As I approached the Tuas Checkpoint, my dad finally relaxed a bit and sat back on his seat.
At the checkpoint itself, I embarrassed myself by inserting the Cash card the wrong way and stuffed up the traffic. When the police came to check what is holding up the traffic, the nice policeman helped me to insert the cash card the right way up and off we go!
We had a nice seafood dinner by the side of the whole row of kelongs with a nice view of the sea and Singapore at the far end. I must really bring Ernest here for a romantic dinner or something one day. It was a very ulu place, but a very nice view.
When we went back to Singapore, it was pretty jammed at the checkpoint. Everyone is rushing back home in time for work tomorrow. I drove again and had my first taste of causeway jams, which was notoriously famous among Singaporeans and JB-reans drivers. Everyone DO NOT give way and most of the cars were really at bumper to bumper. I was really careful not to scratch my uncle’s car and my dad told me to be careful not to be bullied by other experienced drivers. On the whole, it was quite and experience. A lot of experienced drivers told me they rather be driven around than drive themselves because it was tiring. But maybe I just had my license and am very excited about driving. I do not feel that driving is a chore. I felt very big because I could finally drive. I guess all new birds are like that.
