Getting down to business

With only 2 days left to the wedding, Dot and I met up for a serious meeting to 'handover' the wedding preparations. As with all wedding preparations, on the actual day itself, brides will no longer have control over the day's proceedings and Dot had to relinquish all her spreadsheets and plans to her sisters so that all she does on that day is to look pretty and be willing to get married.

But prior to all these serious stuff, we have got to get ourselves lunch. Dot suggested the sheng mian at the coffee shop opp our secondary school and without hesitation, I said yes.

How I miss the sheng mian! The uncle who does the noodles is still there, likewise the drinks auntie. She is very unforgettable. She dressed as though she came straight out of 1960s, but with terrible shoes sense and bad hair. I was amazed after 10 years, she still look the same. I can still remember once we had the sheng mian as usual after school and Dot left her purse at the coffee shop. We quickly turned back and asked the auntie if she has seen it. She said no. We were very insistent that we have just turned out heads and wanted to talk to the coffeeshop boss and check all the tables and all that, then she reluctantly let slipped that she has kept the purse for 'safekeeping'. BS! So she is Dot's favourite drinks auntie of all times as well.

Cue in 1st few bars of Jaws famous soundtrack...

We need not wait long for the sheng mian. I am pleased to say after so many years, the standard of cooking is still there, although the noodle colour has paled somewhat. I thoroughly enjoyed the starchy soup and before long, I was scrapping the bottom of the bowl.

Botak Jones has opened a stall at that coffee shop. Dot got me their menu when she went to order this peri peri fries. They have mission statement and everything. cool.

Uncle has generously given us a portion of ikan bilis, another of my favourite. Good for your teeth

Kopi peng siew dai and homemade ice-lemon tea

After lunch, it is back to business. We went back to her place and got down to discuss the order for the dinner, the songs to play, the script for the emcees and the wedding montages (puke. why must ALL weddings have montages? How many baby pictures of all wedding couples we must see before we know somewhere in a corner of Singapore and somewhere in another corner of Singapore, stars collided and love birds are born 25 to 29 years ago? No offense to Dot though.)

And we took a break (and by that, it is actually me who took a break). The lovebirds went about pottering around their new bed and I found out that there are so many customs you have to adhere to! Both couple cannot sit on the new bed, they have to light the wedding lamps together. Everything must be new. Wah....we dun have all that when Ernest and I got married!

After such physically exhausting activity, Dot and I went back to our discussion and the sweet Casey surprised Dot with a birthday cake! He has thoughtfully put on only 2 candles this time (clever) and got Dot her favourite cake from Bakerzinn, the flourless chocolate almir.

I think Dot has got a conspiracy to fatten me up before her wedding so that no one else is prettier than her on the actual day. She has very kindly bought me 2 slices of cake from Pine Gardens in AMK. For the past year, we have been communicating online about her wedding preparations and the discussion about Pine Gardens cake for wedding was one of our hot topic. Now she has bought me the cake we were discussing about, but dropped in the end because of cost, a slice of lychee martini cake. And also the bur bur hitam cake for contrast. I couldn't wait to try the lychee martini cake.

The lychee martini cake was actually quite bland in taste. But the fluffiness of the sponge and the actual pieces of lychee I can taste in between bites made up for the blandness. I cannot taste anywhere martini about the cake at all. And the lychee is sour. I am glad Dot did not order the cake for her wedding. Might be a serious waste of money.

Now I prefer the bur bur hitam cake. The bur bur hitam topping is very sweet and therefore very complimenting with the light sponge. I prefer this cake over the overly hyped lychee martini one. Now if this cake is chosen as the wedding cake, it might turn out to be the talking point of the wedding.

And of course the winner of the day is the choc almir.

The flourless cake is so smooth, just like a choc mousse. And the texture is so rich, like velvet. No wonder Dot loves it. But I felt so sick and full after 3 cakes, that it is not funny. How do food critics stay slim?

The extended break has to end! We still have much to discuss about. After running through the morning program, we were quite ready to call it a day. But not before I shared with the couple a passage from the Bible I hold very close to my heart everyday of my marriage life.

Ephesians Chapter 5, verse 22 to 33, about Marriage - in Church & Christ.
I shared that women are taught in the Bible to submit to their husbands. Husbands are head of the family and we women must submit and be good assistants to them. We must respect our husband all the time.

However, husbands MUST love their wives, just as how Christ love the church so much that He died for them on the cross. When I was first told about this principle, I was amazed to learn that no where in the Bible women were told to die for their husbands, but husbands are to die for their wives just like how Jesus did for the church. Husbands are further instructed to love their wives just like how they love themselves.

These principles are taught to all marrying Christians and I personally believe are the only secrets to a successful marriage. No need for any teacher or any courses, as long as we remember this everyday of our lives. And these, I shared with Dot and Casey.

Well! It has been a long day indeed. But unfortunately, tired as I am, I found it hard to find rest at night. With the fan on full blast and I yawned til I can count all my teeth in the mirror, but I am unable to fall asleep at night. It might be the hot weather, but I seriously think not, because I can't sleep at night, and I wake up at insanely early hours in the morning as well. Hai....

Ernest is reaching Singapore tomorrow night. Can't wait!
