Being queer

I was introduced to this show way back in 2002 when I was still studying in Brisbane and being the 'suaku' Singaporean I was then, tuned into the 'naughty' channel SBS at about 1130pm at night trying to sneak peek at any porn that is supposedly showing daily around that time.

Queer as Folk was showing at the time and I believe it was already the 2nd or the 3rd episode. Debbie was participating in a gay pride parade and proudly telling people her son is gay and she is proud of him. Pans in Michael with his hot naked buns steaming up the TV screen having sex with Justin.

As all these unfolds before me, I was abruptly initiated into the world of gay, their lives and their sexual relationships. Before that, I did not understand at all what it means to be gay. As the season wore on, I begin to enter their world. To understand why they behave the way they did, the pain they feel and how they numbed all pain.

And by that, Ernest and I took this interest and turned it into a successful consumerism report which scored us As in this subject. Right from the start, we understand the value of pink dollars before Singapore allows IndigNation.

Unfortunately, after graduation, the interest in this wanes and we were integrated into the mad-rush-for-nothing society in Singapore and worked blindly to achieve pittance.

Fast-forward to tonight, I chanced on the rerun on Queer As Folk and was greeted with the opening scene of 2 men openly having sex on the kitchen table. I was again jolted at the seemingly wrong scene, but memories were flooding back and Ernest and I did have a great time research on this queer topic.

It is a shame we do not have many gay friends cos we do really understand what you guys are going through. Yes, the Bible do not encourage this lifestyle at all and yes, some may argue gay is just a form of lifestyle just like de facto living or single parenting. What ever it is, I can tell you, it is fun to be queer. Remember Mardi Gra? Ooh-la-la...
