TGIF!
@ Surry Hills.
We doubled-dated with Noni & Derek today and went for a exquisite Japanese meal at Surry Hills. Traffic at Surry Hills was horrific on Friday evening and I had to park like 2 streets away.
The menu tells me that they are trying to recreate the atmosphere of a traditional Japanese izakaya which is sort of like a Japanese drinking hole where people sit and drink and eat small snacks or grilled food and chatted the whole night through. The decor was classy though with long communal tables, but I feel like I am in a school canteen. Plus the dinner crowd was very biosterious, which make me feel like I am in a fish market.
Lights were dimmed to a point where we had to squint to see the menu against the weak light of the Japanese paper lantern on our communal table so we was like 'wah, like fine dining.'
Check out the food we ordered. Food is really exquisite. Sashimi is fresh and everything else is really delicious, although I am not sure Toko can be an authentic izakaya establishment as we were politely hinted to go when we finished the last spoon of dessert. I thought we are suppose to hang around and talk and drink the whole night through.
From top left fresh nigiri chef selection, sashimi chef's 5 selection, tempura tiger prawns and the special Japanese short grain rice, grilled duck with nashi pear & herb salt, eel roll & tio of creme brulee.
But we did had a lovely time chatting about what's going on in our life and what is the different working and living in Singapore as compared to Australia. Noni and Derek were most curious to hear about the typical Singaporean mentality of comparing everything and anything. This dinner, I am happy to say, was a heartwarming end to a hectic work week.
My favourite food of the evening deserves a special mention. Kurobuto pork of the highest quality was robata grilled and served yakitori-styled. I am nearly peeing in excitement as I look at the picture of our prized grilled pork belly with marbling. Yum.
